Grounds Maintenance Laborer

Pay Scale: $17.00 - $19.00 an hour

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support the grounds maintenance crews in the performance and completion of regular grounds maintenance tasks and/or assist in the completion of special projects on the various grounds maintenance contracts with businesses throughout the community-at-large.

SPECIFIC DUTIES (Essential functions are highlighted in bold):

  1. Perform and complete grounds maintenance tasks, i.e., mow, edge, remove weeds, detail areas, prune, plant, fertilize, aerate, etc., as directed and in keeping with customer and DHE specifications for timeliness and quality.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge, skill, and proficiency with regard to grounds maintenance tools, equipment, supplies, and vehicles:
  1. Know which equipment, tools, and supplies are to be used for each task
  2. Demonstrate ability and proficiency in properly and safely operating each;
  3. Demonstrate care for equipment, performing regular operations checks and ensuring service, as needed, to avoid damage from improper use or neglect.
  4. Immediately report any problems or deficiencies in equipment.
  1. Perform special projects, as directed, in keeping with established timeframes and quality standards.
  2. Serve as backup trainer, overseeing, supervising, and directing consumer crew in keeping with DH protocols, as needed and as directed.
  3. If driving a company vehicle, perform daily pre-trip vehicle inspection and submit to supervisor on a daily basis.
  4. Follow and comply with all DHE and worksite safety policies and procedures, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), and use good judgment concerning safe work behavior and practices; cooperate with safety efforts; report potential hazards and/or safety violations immediately.
  5. Act as positive role model for consumers, as well as for coworkers.
  6. Comply with DHE’s Code of Conduct and other agency policies and procedures and guidelines relative to ethical and professional business practices, interpersonal relationships, and personal conduct.
  7. Attend meetings, inservices, etc. as required.
  8. Advise supervisor of any and all communications and/or happenings that are significant and/or unusual.
  9. Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. M-F; 40 hr week; 30 min. unpaid off-duty meal period and two paid ten-minute off-duty breaks

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum General Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Specialized Education or Training: Working knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials and methods of grounds maintenance
  3. Minimum Work Experience: One year grounds maintenance experience.
  4. Special Skills or Attributes Required:
  5. Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to complete a job
  6. Demonstrated proficiency and safety in the handling and operation of tools and equipment
  7. Working knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  9. Ability to work effectively with persons with developmental disabilities.
  10. If driving - Possess valid California drivers license; good DMV record.
